A Curated Guide for Patients and Students of Classical Chinese Medicine

One of the most consistent things I hear from patients is that they wish they had better resources for understanding their health outside of the treatment room. The internet is full of information about acupuncture and Chinese medicine — much of it superficial, some of it inaccurate, and very little of it rooted in the classical tradition that informs this practice.

The resources below are ones I return to personally and recommend without reservation. They are organized by category and represent a range of entry points — whether you are a curious patient, a student of Chinese medicine, or a practitioner looking to deepen your understanding.

Clinical Research: Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

The following are peer-reviewed studies and systematic reviews drawn from medical literature. I have selected these because they represent the strongest available evidence across the conditions I treat most commonly. Where the evidence is mixed, I have included that honestly — understanding what research does and does not show is part of being an informed patient.

Chronic Pain

Acupuncture for Chronic Pain: Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis One of the most significant analyses of acupuncture for pain to date, drawing on individual patient data from 29 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 18,000 patients. Concluded that acupuncture is superior to both sham and no-acupuncture control for chronic pain conditions including back, neck, shoulder, and osteoarthritis pain.

Acupuncture for Chronic Pain: Updated Meta-Analysis (2018) An updated analysis from the Acupuncture Trialists' Collaboration, confirming that treatment effects of acupuncture for chronic musculoskeletal pain, headache, and osteoarthritis persist over time and cannot be explained solely as placebo effects.

Acupuncture for Chronic Low Back Pain in Older Adults — JAMA (2025) A recent multicenter randomized clinical trial finding that acupuncture provided greater improvements in back pain-related disability at both 6 and 12 months compared with usual medical care alone. Supports acupuncture as an effective and safe option for older adults with chronic low back pain.

Acupuncture for Cancer Survivors with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain — PEACE Trial A randomized clinical trial finding that both electroacupuncture and auricular acupuncture produced significantly greater pain reduction than usual care in cancer survivors with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Insomnia & Sleep

Efficacy of Acupuncture for Insomnia: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis A review of 24 randomized controlled trials finding that acupuncture had a significant effect on patients with insomnia as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, outperforming pharmacotherapy across multiple outcome measures.

Acupuncture for Treatment of Insomnia: Systematic Review of RCTs A comprehensive systematic review finding that acupuncture was superior to medications in increasing total sleep duration by more than three hours, and that acupuncture combined with herbs was significantly better than herbs alone.

Acupuncture for Chronic Insomnia Disorder: Meta-Analysis with Trial Sequential Analysis A 2025 meta-analysis confirming that acupuncture significantly improves subjective sleep quality compared to sham acupuncture, with findings suggesting effects are mediated through regulation of neurotransmitters including GABA and serotonin.

Anxiety & Depression

Acupuncture for Anxiety and Depression in Chronic Insomnia: Randomized Controlled Trial A placebo-controlled trial demonstrating that acupuncture significantly reduced both anxiety and depression scores in patients with chronic insomnia, with effects sustained at three-month follow-up.

Acupuncture for Subthreshold Depression: Randomized Controlled Trial A 2025 randomized trial finding meaningful improvements in depression and anxiety scores in patients treated with acupuncture, with sustained effects at follow-up.

Acupuncture for Tension-Type Headache with Anxiety and Depression A randomized controlled study finding that acupuncture produced positive effects on depression, anxiety, quality of life, and symptom intensity in patients with episodic and chronic tension-type headache.

Migraine & Headache

Long-Term Effect of Acupuncture for Migraine Prophylaxis — JAMA Internal Medicine A randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine finding that true acupuncture was associated with long-term reduction in migraine recurrence compared with sham acupuncture or waiting list controls.

Durable Effect of Acupuncture for Episodic Migraine: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis A 2023 systematic review examining the sustained effects of acupuncture on migraine frequency, attack rate, and pain severity, finding meaningful and durable benefits across multiple outcome measures.

Fertility

Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine for Female Infertility: Systematic Review A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and cohort studies involving 1,851 women finding that Chinese herbal medicine improved pregnancy rates approximately twofold within a four-month period compared with Western medical fertility drug therapy or IVF alone.

Acupuncture for Infertility: Is It an Effective Therapy? A review of clinical evidence suggesting acupuncture may improve ovulation through modulation of the neuroendocrine system, improve ovarian blood flow, and support IVF outcomes through immune modulation.

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine for Female Infertility: Overview of Systematic Reviews A 2021 overview synthesizing systematic review evidence for both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in female infertility, providing a broad summary of the current state of research.

Professional Organizations & Credentialing

National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) The primary national credentialing body for acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners in the United States. A useful resource for patients wanting to verify a practitioner's credentials or understand the certification process.

American Society of Acupuncturists A professional organization advocating for licensed acupuncturists and the integrity of classical training standards.

The Acupuncture Evidence Project A comprehensive review of the clinical evidence for acupuncture across 122 conditions, produced by the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association. One of the most thorough summaries of the research literature available to the general public.

Integrative & Functional Medicine

The Institute for Functional Medicine The leading organization in functional medicine education and clinical practice. Their website includes practitioner directories, patient resources, and accessible explanations of the functional medicine framework. Particularly useful for patients navigating chronic or complex conditions.

Andrew Weil, MD — Integrative Medicine Dr. Weil has been one of the most prominent voices for integrative medicine in the United States for decades. His website covers nutrition, supplementation, mind-body medicine, and the evidence base for complementary approaches.

The Cleveland Clinic Center for Integrative & Lifestyle Medicine One of the most respected integrative medicine programs in the country. A useful resource for patients who want integrative care grounded in conventional medical oversight.

Philosophy, Science & the Nature of Healing

Rupert Sheldrake — Morphic Resonance & the Extended Mind Sheldrake is a Cambridge-trained biologist whose work on morphic resonance and the nature of biological memory represents one of the most thought-provoking challenges to the reductionist model of life and health. I recommend starting with The Science Delusion (published as Science Set Free in the US) or his work on morphic fields and collective memory.

Carl Jung — Collected Works Jung's concept of the collective unconscious and his broader model of the psyche remain deeply relevant to anyone thinking seriously about the relationship between mind, body, and healing. For a more accessible entry point, Man and His Symbols is the place to start.

Movement, Qigong & Taijiquan

Adam Mizner — Heaven Man Earth Taiji Adam Mizner is one of the most celebrated Yang-style Taijiquan teachers in the world. I study and teach under his lineage and consider this practice inseparable from the broader project of health and healing that Chinese medicine represents.

National Qigong Association A professional organization supporting Qigong research, education, and practice in the United States. Includes practitioner directories and accessible introductions to Qigong for patients considering adding a movement practice to their care.
